RHSI Russborough by volunteer Jens Heller
Now, after nearly two years of volunteering in the Walled Garden, I’d like to look back: Since English isn’t my native language (I’m from Berlin), I was admittedly a bit nervous when I first stepped through the gate – a feeling that, in hindsight, turned out to be completely unnecessary.
I was greeted by Gillian, who immediately gave me a tour of the entire garden. Half an hour later, I got a bucket and started weeding. By the following week, I was already harvesting peas.
Everyone in the group turned out to be very welcoming and sociable, and in the midst of the lovely atmosphere, I began to learn about gardening – whether through conversations or simply by picking up practical, hands-on knowledge. Being a bit taller than average for my age group, I am often asked to trim larger plants or pick apples from the higher branches. Generally, volunteers can work based on their own abilities, and are encouraged to follow their own special interest, be it ornamental flowers, fruit, vegetables or herbs, repairs or machine works. I prefer a generalist approach and try to help with a variety of tasks.
My fear of neglecting my own garden was unfounded – the opposite is true. I take a lot of inspiration with me and often continue gardening as soon as I get back home. Now in May, everything in the garden is growing or flowering in abundance. It’s the perfect time for
anyone interested to come and give volunteering a try or simply enjoy the garden. You’re also warmly invited to visit us on Sunday, 18th May, for the RHSI Russborough Garden Show. The Walled Garden will be open, and we look forward to welcoming you.
