I let most of our lawns grow through the summer, cutting paths through them. This has the added interest of changing the shape and appearance of the garden from one season to the next.
The grasses have been suppressed using Yellow Rattle, Rhinanthus minor which is a semi-parasitic plant, absorbing water and minerals from neighbouring plants. From a small handful of seeds, I have been able to spread it over a wide area. It has been essential in allowing wild orchids, to grow and spread. The Common spotted-orchid, Dactylorhiza fuchii is becoming established.

Rogersia ‘Bloody Mary’ always looks good on the “morning after”! Nectaroscordum siculum, which is very attractive to bees, is growing with it.
Finally, a beautiful iris. I don’t know its name, but possibly another member could enlighten me?
