Mount Congreve Gardens

Located in the heart of County Waterford and open year-round, the world-renowned 70 acre Mount Congreve Gardens are a haven for plant and history lovers alike as well as for those simply looking to relax in nature. Boasting one of the largest private collections of plants globally, and described as ‘A Great Garden of the World’,, the entire collection features plants from every continent. The extensive woodland garden has dramatic plantings of magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and acers with surprise follies, specimen trees and swathes of bluebells in spring. A four acre walled garden provides summer interest with lawns, herbaceous borders a Georgian glasshouse undergoing restoration and a large kitchen garden. Further plantings along the 16km of Mount Congreve pathways provide exciting autumn and winter interest. Inspired by Mr Lionel de Rothschild’s exceptional garden at Exbury in Hampshire, works began on Mount Congreve’s Garden in the 1950s by Garden Director Herman Dool. Ambrose Congreve’s passion for his spectacular garden is still evident today.

Mount Congreve House, home to six generations of Congreves was built in 1760 by the celebrated local architect John Roberts and has just undergone extensive renovation with a new visitor centre, cafe and gift shop. To make the most of your visit, we highly recommend a guided garden tour after which you can relax in the Stables Café where you will be served only the freshest of local produce. Or step back in time and experience afternoon tea, an old-world charm in the beautifully restored Tack Room. And follow with a visit to FOXFORD’s beautiful gift shop offering a unique range of gift ideas for any occasion, including beautiful textiles that complement the breathtaking landscape.

Mount Congreve Gardens are easily accessible by car from the N25, or directly from Waterford Greenway by foot or bike.
