The private coastal garden of Karl Flynn and Marcella Dunne has a tropical feel, specialising in palms, tree ferns, bamboo and other architectural plants. Though situated at 150m and close to Howth Summit, it is wind protected by deep, tall hedges allowing many unusual trees and shrubs to thrive. The garden on one third of an acre is set in various compartments including a small Japanese-style garden, woodland area, water feature, patio areas and various mixed borders. The soil is shallow and free draining and slightly acid. Trachycarpus wagnerianus, Dixonia fibrosa, Pseudopanax crassifolius, Aralia chinensis and Cyanthea cooperi all rub shoulders with astelias, echiums, cordylines, acers and many other unusual plants producing a great mix of foliage shapes and textures. An award winning garden, Medina has featured on RTE, in The Open Gardens of Ireland book and in The Irish Garden magazine.
