Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens

These authentic Japanese Strolling Gardens are set over 2.5 acres in the beautiful seaside town of Tramore in Co Waterford overlooking its magnificent beach and bay. They were built to tell the fascinating story of the 19th century Irish/Greek writer Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) who grew up in Ireland, and whose life journey embraced several parts of the world. Eleven unique garden areas pay homage to the fame he attained in his eventual home, Japan, through his incomparable literary descriptions of the people, customs and culture of that country.

Follow Lafcadio Hearn’s story through the Victorian, American and Greek gardens until you eventually arrive in the stunning Japanese gardens where water, stone, wood and plants are arranged in the Japanese style along with authentic architectural features. An abundance of evergreen trees, shrubs, bamboo and ferns provide height, structure and contrasting foliage  all year round while each season brings changes with beautiful bursts of colour from magnolias, camellias, azaleas, pieris, prunus, and many more shrubs and perennials. An excellent plant list for each season and area of the garden is featured on the garden’s own Lafcadio Hearn website.

These gardens are open year round and are a haven of beauty and tranquility for all who visit.
