Situated just outside Wexford town, Johnstown Castle is not only of national importance but a place of romantic charm and tranquility. The three spectacular lakes, walled gardens, Gothic towers and sculptures all offer the setting for this great 19th century castle. Visitors can enjoy walks in the woodlands and around the almost 5 acre Castle Lake. The ornamental gardens and hothouses, covering 4 acres, originally designed in the mid 1800s, still retain their early design today. Restoration and improvement works are ongoing and volunteers are always welcome.
In May 2019, the Castle at Johnstown will open for the first time to the public after initial conservation works. The Irish Heritage Trust manages this new visitor experience and is working with Johnstown Castle Estate owners Teagasc and the Irish Agricultural Museum.
