Environmentalist and gardener Carl Wright started a project in 1999 in the Burren on the west coast of Co Clare to create what is now one of the most unusual and outstanding gardens in Ireland. Based around an old cottage, beside the Caher river, over the past twenty five years, Carl has single handedly expanded his original acreage of hazel and blackthorn scrub into a wonderland of plants and garden design. While the garden contains an incredible variety of plants and several notable plant collections, it has been specifically designed to blend into and incorporate the surrounding landscape. A large pond dominates the front garden and is constantly fed by the river and has become naturalised with a large variety of native Irish water plants and many garden plants. Rising behind the restored cottage is the secluded back garden. Here using the vast cache of unearthed stone, terraces with unusual water features and raised beds merge upwards into the woodland and a recently created fernery . A spectacular stone Moon Window adds further structure and interest. New sections of garden are added every year, the most recent being a folly with views of the Caher Valley.
The garden has featured in many publications, magazines and books worldwide.
