Gardening for Children by Agata Lojek

When I started volunteering at the Russborough Walled Garden in September 2022, I wasn’t sure what to expect…. I had to bring my 4-year-old daughter with me (most of the time). We always did outdoors, nature related activities and we loved it!

From the very beginning, my daughter was making friends with other volunteers. She was helping, imitating, discovering and learning with all her senses. 3 years later, she asks me, if can we go to the garden on Saturday. We both love it! The quiet work and the chatter, the rain and the sunshine, plants, mini beasts, birds and above all, the well-earned lunch, when we can catch up with our friends.

It is so important that children have an opportunity to bond with the natural world, like garden and what’s in it (plants, wildlife). Children are naturally curious about the world around them and by introducing them to the wonders of nature, we can help them develop a lifelong love of learning. The benefits of gardening:

1.Fresh air and exercise; keeping fit and healthy while exploring and discovering the world around me.
2. A connection to nature; through seasons, observing changes, growing from seeds, waiting for the plants to grow and harvest. An appreciation for plants and wildlife; learn to respect all forms of life from the smallest superheroes like worms and woodlice, different pollinators (bees, butterflies etc.) to the birds and mammals that keep us company in the garden (life cycle, food chain etc.)
3. A life-long love of learning; spending time in the garden/ in nature is a great way to encourage a love of learning in a hands-on way.
4. Social and emotional development; cooperation; helping, asking questions, learning about plants from experienced people, development of friendships based on the common interest.
