RHSI Partner Garden – Ardán Garden

High on the hillside in Howth, with Dublin Bay spread out below, lies one of our most inspiring Partner Gardens, Ardán Garden, created by Nuala Doherty and Conall O’Caoimh.

From the very beginning, Ardán was never going to be an ordinary garden. It’s a steep, challenging site, the sort of ground that might have sent most gardeners running but in Nuala and Conall’s hands, it has become something magical. The name Ardán, meaning “height” or “rising ground” in Irish, couldn’t be more fitting.

What they’ve created is a garden that feels both wild and carefully held, a place where nature, art and imagination are all in conversation. Every path and planting seems to belong exactly where it is, shaped by wind, stone and sea light.

A Garden with Heart and Soul

The first thing you notice about Ardán is its sense of flow. There’s a rhythm to it, a pulse that comes from the land itself. Hardy Mediterranean herbs mingle with an eclectic range of botanical gems; sculptural pieces are tucked quietly among the planting; and the entire space hums with life.

It’s organic, yes for sure but its also deeply personal space. Every choice reflects an eye for beauty and a respect for biodiversity. This isn’t about taming nature; it’s about working with it, listening to it, and finding joy in its small surprises.

Their new video captures that feeling perfectly – the connection between the people, the plants, and the place. It’s a lovely watch, and well worth a few peaceful minutes with a cup of tea.

Why We Love Our Partner Gardens

The RHSI Partner Gardens are a very special part of what we do. They represent the best of Irish gardening – creativity, generosity, community, and care for the natural world.

Each one has its own heartbeat and story, and together they show how gardens can be places of connection as much as cultivation.

We’re so proud to count Ardán among them – a garden that reminds us what can happen when passion meets patience, and when a landscape is given the space to speak for itself.
