News from RHSI Walled Garden at Russborough

News by volunteer Carla King

Russborough Walled Garden is beautiful is any season but this spring it’s looking splendid with many of the trees in full bloom. Originally, the central focus of a walled garden was the production of food for the family and staff of the great house that would have had to be provided continually. Today, more of the garden is devoted to the ornamental aspect – the herbaceous borders and long walks – but a portion of it is still dedicated to fruit and vegetables. Something edible is produced from the garden in every season. The kales that remained green throughout the winter are just finishing and there are still some leeks. The rhubarb is now at its prime and available for sale at the gate, while globe artichokes are already beginning to form on the plants. However, the time of intensive sowing and planting out began in March and is continuing. Broad beans, potatoes, red and yellow onions, peas, chard have already gone in and tomatoes and cucumber are to follow in the glasshouse. Flowers are emerging on the strawberry plants and promise a delicious summer harvest.

As someone who joined the Russborough volunteers last summer, I must say that I look forward to every Saturday spent in the garden – there is a lovely warm atmosphere in the group and each week I come away having learned something new.

Volunteers are at work and the garden is open to the public on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10.30am. Eircode W91W284.
