Spring is the perfect time to get stuck into the garden and give your perennials a fresh start. Dividing perennials now not only helps keep your plants healthy and vigorous, but it’s also a brilliant way to multiply your stock for free. If you’re based in Ireland, spring division takes advantage of the milder weather, giving plants plenty of time to establish before the summer heat kicks in. Plus, with our Society’s Plant Sale coming up on April 26th, it’s a great opportunity to pot up any extras and donate them to a worthy cause!
Why Divide Perennials in Spring?
Perennials benefit from being divided every few years, especially if they’ve become overcrowded or started to flower less. By lifting and splitting them now, you’re giving them the best chance to thrive, reducing competition for nutrients and allowing for better air circulation around the roots. Spring division is ideal for plants that bloom in summer and autumn, as they have plenty of time to recover and put on fresh growth before their flowering season begins.
Which Perennials to Divide Now?
Some plants are best left until autumn, but many perennials can be successfully divided in spring. Here are a few that respond particularly well:
Hostas – A great way to get more of these lush foliage plants.
Astrantia – Dividing helps keep them blooming beautifully.
Daylilies (Hemerocallis) – Keeps them flowering prolifically.
Rudbeckia (Black-eyed Susan) – Encourages healthy, bushy plants.
Geraniums (Cranesbill) – A quick way to spread them around your garden.
Phlox – Prevents overcrowding and improves flowering.
How to Divide Perennials
Lift the plant – Use a fork to carefully lift the plant from the ground, taking care not to damage the roots.
Shake off excess soil – This makes it easier to see where to divide.
Split into sections – Use a sharp knife, spade, or even your hands to separate the clump into smaller, healthy sections. Each division should have a good amount of roots and shoots.
Replant immediately – Place divisions into well-prepared soil or pots, keeping them well-watered while they settle in.
Top Tips for Success
✅ Water well before and after dividing – Keeps stress to a minimum.
✅ Choose a cool, overcast day – Reduces shock to the plant.
✅ Trim back top growth if needed – Helps reduce moisture loss.
✅ Don’t be afraid to be ruthless – Some plants can be tough, but they’ll bounce back stronger!
Donate to Our Plant Sale!
If you find yourself with spare plants after dividing, why not donate them to our Society’s Plant Sale on April 26th? It’s a fantastic way to support our charity, share your garden favourites, and pick up some new treasures in return.
Happy gardening!
